Some thoughts on the Fig Tree generation parable that was prompted by the Coronavirus. How quickly is this generation passing?
Many of you may know, but some members may not, the Fig Tree parable is in reference to the nation of Israel. Here is part of the parable -
Matthew 24:32-37
32 Now learn the parable from the fig tree: when its branch has already become tender and puts forth its leaves, you know that summer is near; 33 so, you too, when you see all these things, recognize that He is near, right at the door. 34 Truly I say to you, this generation will not pass away until all these things take place. 35 Heaven and earth will pass away, but My words will not pass away.
36 But of that day and hour no one knows, not even the angels of heaven, nor the Son, but the Father alone. 37 For the coming of the Son of Man will be just like the days of Noah.
Here is a cross-reference -
Hosea 9:10
10 I found Israel like grapes in the wilderness;
I saw your forefathers as the earliest fruit on the fig tree in its first season
There is much more to Matthew 24 and I encourage you to read it and there are more references, but suffice to say historically and Biblically the Fig Tree represents Israel and in this instance it's regathering as a nation. Specifically 1948 when it became a nation once again and were gathered again from the wilderness of the nations. More importantly is the coming of Jesus a generation after we see this sign. As Matthew 24 says "this generation will not pass away until all these things take place". So what is this "generation"? The generation that has restored Israel. How long is a generation? Psalm 90 provides a range.
Psalm 90:10-12
10 The days of our lives are seventy years;
And if by reason of strength they are eighty years,
Yet their boast is only labor and sorrow;
For it is soon cut off, and we fly away.
11 Who knows the power of Your anger?
For as the fear of You, so is Your wrath.
12 So teach us to number our days,
That we may gain a heart of wisdom.
So the range is 70-80 years. If you take 1948 and add 70-80 years you get 2018-2028. 2028 is the high end of the generation. If the tribulation of Daniel 9:24 is 7 years long, then you subtract the 7 from the high end, being 2028, and you get 2021 as the start of tribulation. So we could be near. I know I'm skipping over a lot, but that is not exactly what this thread is about. I'm not looking for a discussion on the length of tribulation. What has peaked my curiosity is this "generation"
What peaked my interest is this Coronavirus and the age group it seems to be attacking. It seems to be mainly attacking the elderly, not so much the young as many past illnesses have included. It seems this virus has put the "passing away" of this generation into overdrive. Those 70-80 year old people and above are at great risk and are dying at a much higher rate than others. And Jesus also says "Truly I say to you, this generation will not pass away until all these things take place." So he is near, at the door. Summer is physically and metaphorically near. Psalm 90:10 says "Yet their boast is only labor and sorrow: For it is soon cut off, and we fly away" I'm curious if anyone else sees this virus as possibly speeding up the "passing away" of this generation? Will this be "cut off soon"? And we will "fly away" to meet the Lord shortly? Of course this could be weeks, months, or even a few years. Is Jesus not just at the door calling to us, but knocking, asking us to answer? Is his knocking getting louder?
