I find it amazing that after all of the occultic/pagan sun worship that has happened over the years, there will be no sun in the new heaven.
Further amazing when you consider that light (then day and night) was one of the first things God created.
God made the sun, moon and stars to be for signs and seasons (one of the reasons we're all so excited about the Revelation 12 sign being fulfilled in the heavens on September 23rd). And He's used the visual splendor of the heavens to show signs of judgment (ex. eclipses) as well as a testimony of His glory.
So it's amazing to think that once the story being played out in the current heaven (of God's judgment and redemption) is complete, the new heaven will be something entirely new and different.
And we'll be in eternity, with no more need for the sun, moon and stars to not only mark signs, but no more need of them to mark and keep time for seasons, days and years.
And the angels got to witness God create the first heaven and earth, and rejoiced over it.
It makes me wonder if those who Christ has redeemed will get to see God fashion the new heaven and new earth. See the creation of something from nothing (knowing that it will never be corrupted the way the first creation was).
I also wonder if there will be a memorial record kept of the old heaven and earth, so that we can reflect back during eternity on the amazing thing God did for us. We won't know until that time, but I'm eager to find out. And eager to see the glory of God shinning so strongly that there's no need of a sun (which would just provide a lesser light than His glory).
Edit: Found an answer to my above speculation on whether we'll think on the old heaven and earth.
Isaiah 65:17 King James Version (KJV)
17 For, behold, I create new heavens and a new earth: and the former shall not be remembered, nor come into mind.
Revelation 21:23 King James Version (KJV)
23 And the city had no need of the sun, neither of the moon, to shine in it: for the glory of God did lighten it, and the Lamb is the light thereof.
23 And the city had no need of the sun, neither of the moon, to shine in it: for the glory of God did lighten it, and the Lamb is the light thereof.
Revelation 22:5 King James Version (KJV)
5 And there shall be no night there; and they need no candle, neither light of the sun; for the Lord God giveth them light: and they shall reign for ever and ever.

Genesis 1:3-5 King James Version (KJV)
3 And God said, Let there be light: and there was light.
4 And God saw the light, that it was good: and God divided the light from the darkness.
5 And God called the light Day, and the darkness he called Night. And the evening and the morning were the first day.

Genesis 1:14-19 King James Version (KJV)
14 And God said, Let there be lights in the firmament of the heaven to divide the day from the night; and let them be for signs, and for seasons, and for days, and years:
15 And let them be for lights in the firmament of the heaven to give light upon the earth: and it was so.
16 And God made two great lights; the greater light to rule the day, and the lesser light to rule the night: he made the stars also.
17 And God set them in the firmament of the heaven to give light upon the earth,
18 And to rule over the day and over the night, and to divide the light from the darkness: and God saw that it was good.
19 And the evening and the morning were the fourth day.
14 And God said, Let there be lights in the firmament of the heaven to divide the day from the night; and let them be for signs, and for seasons, and for days, and years:

Job 38:4-7 King James Version (KJV)
4 Where wast thou when I laid the foundations of the earth? declare, if thou hast understanding.
5 Who hath laid the measures thereof, if thou knowest? or who hath stretched the line upon it?
6 Whereupon are the foundations thereof fastened? or who laid the corner stone thereof;
7 When the morning stars sang together, and all the sons of God shouted for joy?

21 And I saw a new heaven and a new earth: for the first heaven and the first earth were passed away; and there was no more sea.

Revelation 21:23-27 King James Version (KJV)
23 And the city had no need of the sun, neither of the moon, to shine in it: for the glory of God did lighten it, and the Lamb is the light thereof.
24 And the nations of them which are saved shall walk in the light of it: and the kings of the earth do bring their glory and honour into it.
25 And the gates of it shall not be shut at all by day: for there shall be no night there.
26 And they shall bring the glory and honour of the nations into it.
27 And there shall in no wise enter into it any thing that defileth, neither whatsoever worketh abomination, or maketh a lie: but they which are written in the Lamb's book of life.
