Does anyone else believe the USGS is downgrading EQ magnitudes? The one above is listed as a 7.1 on EMSC. Last week's Alaska quake is a 7.0 according to EMSC. USGS does this very consistently and I think it's an effort to avoid panic...nothing to see here.
Magnitude Mw 7.1 Region VANUATU Date time 2021-08-18 10:10:06.3 UTC Location 14.89 S ; 167.12 E Depth 100 km Distances 341 km NNW of Port-Vila, Vanuatu / pop: 35,900 / local time: 21:10:06.3 2021-08-18 18 km N of Port-Olry, Vanuatu / pop: 1,900 / local time: 21:10:06.3 2021-08-18

They did upgrade it to a 6.9, so who knows what they're up to. Maybe their measurement system is not an exact one.

I found this site and have been watching it for the past several years. When I first started checking it, earthquakes the past 30 days (4.0+) were in the 600s. It has been steadily increasing. Just now there are 1077. ds.iris.edu/seismon/eventlist/index.phtml

Thank you, Bernie. Well, if it happened, I missed it. Apparently last night there was a 6.5 in the Cascades...B.C. Canada, felt in Vancouver as some are reporting (I heard there were at least 40 reports on USGS). The internet is buzzing about this earthquake that was reported by USGS and then quickly removed as being a false reading.
Some are saying they watched seismographs go off, saw the P-wave, etc. So the question is, if this was not an earthquake, what would make seismographs register a 6.5 mag. EQ when one did not occur?
