Yes bernie now it's not just the big quakes, but the swarms of small ones happening all over the place. Idaho, New Madrid, S. Cal, P.R., the NW US & B.C., all really interesting. Thank fitz! Shall we assume that the UGGS is routinely lowering the official magnitude by 1....if God did an earthquake at 6.0...the USGS makes it a 5.0... bernie and fitz are our closest followers on all things quake related I'm a total novice so I can't speak to it, but I do notice sometimes the affected countries list a higher magnitude in their news articles. It could be they're using a different measuring method though.

Shall we assume that the UGGS is routinely lowering the official magnitude by 1....if God did an earthquake at 6.0...the USGS makes it a 5.0... Who's to say? Many have suggested that USGS regularly downgrade the true magnitudes of big quakes so as not to incite panic. IDK enough about how they determine it, but I would think it's an average of reporting stations out to a certain distance.

(AP) — The U.S. Geological Service is reporting that a magnitude-6.4 earthquake struck in remote western Nevada early Friday. The temblor was reported at 4:03 a.m. about 35 miles outside Tonopah, just east of the Sierra Nevada range. The initial quake struck about 4.7 miles (7.6 kilometers) deep, the USGS said, and at least six sizable aftershocks were recorded shortly thereafter, including two with estimated magnitudes of 5.4. People from Salt Lake City, Utah, to California’s Central Valley tweeted that they felt the quake.
