I definitely agree with this. I think sometimes we know and sometimes we don't.
I'm reminded of the great irony of the Sheep and Goat judgment in Matthew 25:31-46. The righteous are unaware of their good deeds when the Lord rewards them. They ask the Lord, "when did we do x?" The wicked on the other hand ask, "when did we not do x?"
Also, the false disciples in Matthew 7:21-23 are told to depart after they boast in their works:
I've always thought Matthew 7:21-23 was strong evidence for the general principle of sola fide. Those who trust in themselves will be lost, but those who trust in the Lord will be saved.

I've always thought Matthew 7:21-23 was strong evidence for the general principle of sola fide. Those who trust in themselves will be lost, but those who trust in the Lord will be saved. I agree.... These verses has always struck me not so much as Jesus denying people entrance into heaven -- but focusing more of the WHY He should let them in.... Their reply Answers the entire issue --- Everything is about WHAT THEY DID -- never about what Jesus DID!

I Corinthians 13 says, among other things, that Love believeth all things. This means, that when someone tells us things, and we can't prove otherwise, we lovingly take them at their word. We give them the benefit of the doubt. I don't "crack down on someone" and accuse them of not being saved if they slip up and sin. I try to encourage them in the way of righteousness. Many times you can't know if someone truly knows the Lord until you know them a while and can observe the patterns of their life. Even then you may not know for sure, but usually you can.

Like I pointed out in the "especially thread", I cannot help but feel that God is so Loving that he has so worked out that there are going to be more "Saved" than what we can even imagine.
I do not know how that will be accomplished, but when you have scripture that say
"...Savior of All...." "...uncountable multiple in heaven...."
I think these are hints of God's Grace that will surpass what we can imagine....
And that is saying something.... Because the Grace being shown right now ... Given to those who simply believe in the finished work of Jesus Christ! Is pretty much close to unbelievable.....
Let's look at the storyline
Your telling me the Creator of the Universe- Loved His creation so much, that He sent His one and Only Son to die at the hands of those very same creations .... So that He could grant atonement to them - just so He could have a loving fellowship with them.....
Does that type of Love really exist?
I am betting my life on it!
It is all of Him and none of me....

I agree we will be surprised when we get there, to see who is there and who is not. There will be some real surprises.
As for the thief on the cross, he clearly had a genuine belief on Christ. Jesus confirmed it and it was recorded for our knowledge--deathbed confessions are valid, as long as they are sincere. Notice the thief also was not baptized, nor did he have time to show much if anything in the way of outward fruit--he believed on Christ and it was counted to him for righteousness.
Water baptism is not part of salvation. Good Works, or Fruits are a result of true salvation, not a factor in it.
