So..... I'm out in the country and our dog seems to have come down with a parasite. Probably tapeworm. I know - disgusting. Taking him to the vet, but wanted to ask if anyone has experience with this and knows an effective way to keep my house and family clean from these things.

Gary, my mom lived by the saying, "an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure." Once you get your dog rid of the parasite, one good way to keep him/her from getting them again is get you some diatomaceous earth and sprinkle it on the dog food occasionally(once a week?). If you're wondering what diatomaceous earth is, it is the remains of tiny microscopic diatoms in seawater that collect on the bottom of the ocean when they die. When crushed/milled, under a microscope, it looks like tiny shards of glass and has the effect you would expect on parasites and worms. The great thing about it is that it is harmless to humans/dogs/cats, etc. in fact you can eat it yourself. It is also effective to keep unwanted pests out of your lawn or garden(small grasshoppers and aphids, etc). Unfortunately it has the same effect on the good bugs, so be selective where you apply it. It can be purchased at most any garden store or online and is pretty inexpensive. I hope this helps.

stormyknight - when my daughter was about 10 she had an experience with this stuff. She was visiting her grandma in FL and her aunt was staying there. At one point during the visit she told me "nana told aunt debbie to stop eating dirt and get it off her dining room table" It def works on critters! I got the garden variety from home depot and dumped it on a mud hornet nest. they were gone in a day! I believe the dirt sticks to their bodies and dries them out, dehydrates them then they die. I do see that there is an edible kind, so make sure you get the right one Gary,

THANK YOU! Seriously, thank you! The thought of any of us getting a tapeworm, well... YUCK.
Is there a particular brand you recommend that is safe?

I don't know of any specific brand, but I would recommend that it not have any additives. That kind is the safest. I bought a forty pound sack years ago at our local grain elevator(it works great for storing grain) and am still using it. It has the consistency of powdered sugar, so the 40 lb. sack was huge!
edit: oh and if you get some on your hands, don't rub your eye!!! If you do, rinse rinse rinse, you'll be fine.
