I'm writing this just to point out some things that at one time or other we most all knew, but have seemed to either forget or ignore since we became "scholars" of scripture. The text we study were not written by brain surgeons and nuclear physicists. In fact most were very uneducated in general, the highly educated seldom talked with the heathens, who had little formal eduction and at least John, my personal favorite author in the scriptures, I teased about not being able to read and write, or so it is said by scholars of the ancient texts. True or not doesn't matter to this discussion. The fact that Jesus chose the common and the uneducated to do the teaching to the rest of us does. If we truly want to spread understanding of scripture, then it behooves us to begin by using language that the common man knows and understands. If we simply wish to impress the other scholars, we are free to use any language we wish, but we do so knowing that all the regular folks will just be confused and lost and it will probably do THEM more harm than good. I'm am by no means against scholarship or study or delving deeply into scriptural truths, shadows of things and the like. But I'd remind the more learned of us that we ARE trying to help those that may not grasp some of the finer points of scriptural interpretation. And forcing them to read a concordance and a lexicon and a dictionary, all at the same time as trying to grasp what ever truth you are trying to impart, is not really helpful as it is frustrating to the average christian. We opt for what is easy for us, like saying pre-tribulation theory or millennial kingdom, exegesis and all the sophisticated language of scholarship. But to the local carpenter that just wants to understand, we could better serve by actually using a sentence or a few words, rather than a shortened but elongated word to cover an entire idea, assuming everyone will know or have time for an extended study in scholarship, just to read our writings. To further complicate things, I know from personal study, that within those big worded theories, there are yet still differences of opinion. The bible is simple, for simple people. It does contain complicated ideas and difficult passages and concepts. But if we want to unite the church, helping everyone to understand better, perhaps we might consider breaking our scholarship down to an explanation that , say, any 18 or 20 year old can at least hope to understand, without needing text books and a vast vocabulary. More posts/articles, with better wording will go farther than longer ones with bigger words, if understanding is the desire. It means dumbing down your vast language skills at times, but it will have a much larger impact and will be both better understood and better received by a larger audience. It may mean more words, but it also means less misunderstandings. Just a thought. I've both experienced this and heard ALOT of people say it, though they feel ashamed and embarrassed to actually put it out there for public consumption. It seems it makes them feel inferior if they admit to not getting what the "smart people" seem to get. Again, this is not a slam on the well educated or scholars, but a reminder that you are the few, not the many. Help some of us idiots out by easier wording and simpler explanations. I'd rather read an article that has 4 parts, well explained and plainly understood, than a four page one that forces me to do a word study to follow it. Most just browse through and won't read if the language is what they feel is over there head. Thanks for reading my own simple but lengthy explanation! God Bless.
