I've tried before to memorize verses and am terrible at sticking with it and reviewing them so they stay memorized. I've been challenged to try again. So, I was studying Philippians and ran across a couple verses that I am going to try and memorize.
Anyone need encouragement to commit some verses to memory? Or just to review ones that you already know?
I have found that if I write the verses out where I can visualize them that helps me. I also found an app to try. Anyone have any other tips or tricks?
I am starting with Phil 1:9-11 for those who are curious And it is my prayer that your love may abound more and more, with knowledge and all discernment, so that you may approve what is excellent, and so be pure and blameless for the day of Christ, filled with the fruit of righteousness that comes through Jesus Christ, to the glory and praise of God.

Hi Natalie, When I want to memorize verses, it is usually a verse or verses that the Lord has impressed upon my spirit; so I personalize it, and try seeing me talking with Jesus through/about the verse. Reading it every day helps, too.

I wish I could memorize the whole book! One thing I do practice to try to remember is when something pops into my head or I read it here or see a news story or whatever, I know there is a section of scripture that relates. I tend to look up the verses on my phone right away (almost doing a two minute bible study) and this has helped me to recall certain verses. I also read the bible almost entirely each year. I know some study, deep in a topic or book, but reading it in its entirety (in addition to study) has helped me recall some things.

I have never been good at memorizing scripture so I try to remember the subject matter and the general location of the verse. I know where most things are at in the BofR but I cannot quote one verse. That does not really matter now that we have the Bible online; so just type in a word search.
The amazing thing about OT people is that they did memorize entire books of scripture and some were quite literally walking Bibles.

For about 3 years I was helping kids memorize scripture in our local Awana club. I listened repeatedly to the same verses year after year and they never would stick. I finally memorized Ephesians 2:8-9 alongside a young clubber who was struggling with memorization. We learned it through finding a song version of it.
I was much better at memorizing when I was a child but there was no Awana club with a set curriculum so I memorized for extra points at DVBS passages like Esther 8:9. Not a very useful verse to pull out of your pocket when in conversation about faith. 😐
These are some of the best tips that I have for helping to memorize:
1. Find it in song if possible.
2. Verses on CDs. Our one Awana book came with a CD with the verses on it. We used to listen to it in the car regularly to get the verses down. We live 10 minutes from town, so the short time spent reciting really helped.
3. Use a dry erase board. Write out the verse and erase the words and replace with a line as you know them. When it is all blank, you can recite the whole verse. Another dry erase option is to erase the words all but the first letter if you need to progress slower.
4. Write out by hand and carry a paper with you to review the verses you are working on. This is how I memorized as a kid.
5. Make flash cards. When my daughter wanted to complete her second Sparks book but was pretty far behind, we made flash cards. She would carry them with her to school and use some of the time on her bus ride (1 hour each way) to review her verses she was working on.
6. Be a volunteer. Find a local Awana club or other club or Sunday school that helps teach verses to kids. By helping to teach, it can help you to memorize (or at least recall better)
Scripture memorization has been really helpful for my family. My daughter is 11 and was questioning her salvation a couple weeks ago. I was able to pull Ephesians 2:8-9 on our walk and remind her that she did learn that verse a few years ago and was able to remind her what it said and what it means for her. 😁
