Is there a happy medium with TV? Can we watch some shows and not others?
Have you ever noticed shows like Friends, Seinfeld, Big Bang and other big names blaspheme constantly saying the Lord’s name in vain. What about people switching partners for sex like shoes in a closet per episode. And in all of it we laugh at all the worldliness in it that seems familiar. It’s a harmless TV show right? I don’t think so. It’s hard to separate from these things we watch to relax. Do you find comfort in a show or series that is not Holy?
We need to be honest. I do. I been binge watching Supernatural. A series about 2 guys who destroy ghosts, vampires and demons. But the 2 sent holy men. As they check out girls and offer colorful words safe for TV but still not appropriate...ever feel wondering...what can I watch?
So, this is not a question I’m asking for me but rather to you all. What do you think about what you watch and how do you distinguish what’s acceptable? For if we with our eye allow darkness in, the whole body can be darkened right...

All the time Venge. There really isnt much good on TV. I like to relax and watch things that are mindless, but you have to be on guard no matter what it is. Last night I had to look away from the horrific Jets so we put on American Ninja Warrior. Not a bad show in all, but one of the contestants was clearly into spiritual things that were not Holy.
This is the world we live in. We cant isolate, but need to care about our participation.

I watch less and less all the time. Shows that used to bring entertainment don't anymore. I tend to stick to less intrusive worldy themes now and enjoy watching gardening shows, British baking shows, house buying or flipping, and will watch SpongeBob with my kids.
I've switched to enjoying YouTube as I can find speakers to listen to and enjoy learning about various Christian subjects. Occasionally I like to watch some lighter fare. Shawn Woods Mousetrap channel is one of my favorites as well as Joseph Carter and his minks. I really dislike mice and because I live in the only rat-free province in Canada, I find watching them talk about rats interesting. Dominoes falling, marbles racing and wood turning or metal work is also quite interesting. Before I know it, my free entertainment time is used up and I don't miss watching the same crap everyone else is talking about.

It can be difficult to find palatable programming. Discernment as to what the messages are, and how those messages are portrayed is key. Some shows still give a moral perspective on character behavior that demonstrates whether that behavior is acceptable (good) or not (bad). I have noticed this with some shows that I do not mind sharing here (for this purpose as examples), because some may wish to try them and see what I am talking about. Period pieces such as the The Crown, Poldark and Downton Abbey show people in real life historical situations. They demonstrate the actual behaviors of real people (sin nature included) without glamorizing that behavior; and at (at least to me) appear to let the viewer decide whether behavior in a given situation is moral or not. It becomes easy with these shows for the viewer to conclude that a given character is misbehaving, or acting in a morally upright way. If you wish, you may also try a new movie which was just released called Yesterday, which is about a guy who gets hit by a bus; and when he wakes up in the hospital, discovers that he is the only one who knows who the Beatles were, and what he does with that knowledge. The trailers are on Youtube if you want to get an idea of what the movie is like. Some of the more eclectic movies that have been released tend to avoid most of the mainstream nonsense that many here are concerned about. Your mileage may vary: The Iron Giant Battleship That Thing You Do Christopher Robin National Treasure Alpha Tron: Legacy Pride and Prejudice (2005) Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon Star Wars: Rogue One Treasure Planet The Rocketeer Ratatouille Hidalgo The Lakehouse Sense and Sensibility (1995) You may wish to screen their trailers to see if you find them acceptable. Also, highly recommended is the "The Jim Shooter $1.98 Storytelling Lecture" (I know this sounds off-topic, but he makes many points about good storytelling; so you will understand why I made the recommendations above.) found here: storytelling.jimshooter.com/the198/You can learn to filter out the bad things and appreciate the good things about a movie, book or tv show (Romans 12:9). Discard the garbage. Focus on what is good. Some shows wont have anything redeemable about them. Some will.

My 5 yr old daughter was watching a cartoon today. The character said OMG (not the acronym but the whole thing) twice. She said, dad they said a bad word right? I said yes sweety so let’s turn that off. Love that she listens to me when I tell her things. Cause 90% of the time I think she’s ignoring me

while being exposed to the day in day out of tv, which often shows a man-centered idea of morality, or lack there of (agenda-pushing, pick any global agenda), I am grateful to the Lord that my eyes are unblinded to this insanity. Sometimes I pray for those who are fed the deluge of reality-show "reality" as normal behavior or that it even exists that way. Honestly, because we do not have children, I am not faced with parenting the debauchery that exists out there. However, my hubby has realized my "milk toast" white bread "innocence" and knows I despise viewing bloody violence, gang related portrayal & sometimes war violences, and the sex scenes (in all its sneaky forms). So, he knows I rarely watch ANY movies. Plus I think Hollywood is part of the media which is part of the beast system which is revealing its ugly head and being exposed of its derangement, thank God.
Basically the world goes about its deceit in front of me when I watch the tube. All the while I can still rest, and give thanks that He has me in His Hands, and He is helping me discern the truth of God's moral compass/plumb line that DOES get relayed thru the airwaves, but often is hidden. Even if I fail in meeting that plumb line God has established, He disciplines me, and guides me, all the days of my life. He will impress upon my heart the words to speak out to call out falsehoods being imaged across the airways. The tv is like a beast that speaks, and it is just that, a type of horn or head of a bigger system. It speaks very arrogant words against our God, even in the news, it speaks blasphemies of our Creator and Romans 1 comes to fruition daily.
Lately, Truth has been flowing in this household of ours and it is a breath of fresh air for even my hubby. Nothing I did but He alone impresses upon the heart of my man. Its happening before my eyes and the tv is involved. So tv cant be all that bad, right?
Within this beastly tube there is the ability to spread the Good News and Truth. Many are on the airways trying.
