As time goes on, I am leaning away from the traditional 'Nicolae Carpathia' view of Antichrist as a secular being. Why? In the Scriptures, it is written, "I have come in My Father's name, and you do not receive Me; if another comes in his own name, you will receive him." (NASB). So, Antichrist will come in his own name, and he will be received by the Jews. This dovetails nicely with the Jewish Messianic fever pitch slowly building. So, if the Jews are to receive Antichrist, he will have to fulfill their expectations. Let's look at those:
So, I went and looked at the Mishneh Torah. In case anybody doesn't know what that is, it is a gigantic tome designed to sum up the entire Oral Law up to that point, written by an extremely respected figure, Moses ben Maimon (also called the Rambam or Maimonides). Luckily, basically all we need is in the tract titled "Kings and Wars".
Maimonides says, "Now, if a king should arise from the House of David who is versed in Torah and engages in Commandments, as did David his forefather, in accordance with both the Written and the Oral Torahs, and he enjoins all of Israel to follow in its ways and encourages them to repair its breaches, and he fights the Wars of G-d, then he may be presumed to be the Messiah. If he succeeds in his efforts and defeats the enemies around and builds the Sanctuary in its proper place and gathers the dispersed of Israel, he is definitely the Messiah."
Basically, Satan's man looks like he will be descended from David, will build the Temple, gathers the Jews, fights the wars of God, and is versed in Torah and follows the mizvot (Commandments). Borrowing a leaf from Mr. Lauer over at A Little Strength, this fits extremely well with Gog and Magog. God Himself wins the war singlehandedly, but Satan somehow manipulates the situation to make it look like his man did something great, or had an integral part or something. Then, if he becomes leader of Israel through this fame and builds the Temple, well, that's it. Jews will flock back to see the 'messiah', fulfilling another checkbox. Finally, as long as he pays lip service to the Torah, he'll be golden; building the Temple will have signed his golden ticket, if you will.
He could then ecumenicalize all religions together under the Seven Noahide Laws, and then use the law on the oneness of God/idolatry (in the meaning of one and singular, as opposed to the Trinitarian one and three) to persecute and kill Christians. Funnily enough, beheading is the punishment for Gentiles for violating the Noahide Laws, which dove tails nicely with Rev. 20:4.
Of course, the Enemy still hates Jerusalem, now Mystery Babylon. Antichrist, in the middle of the 70th Week, declares himself god. The Jews, as blinded as they may be right now, will not fall for this; they will reject him. Furious, he then begins the extermination campaign of the Jewish people. He burns up and destroys Jerusalem (Rev 18:16), his old capital, and begins the campaign to eliminate all the Jews. Having used them, he now destroys two-thirds of them (Zechariah 13:8), but a remnant is saved at Petra. At the end of the age, they call upon Jesus, who returns and ends the madness. Thus ends my summary of my theory on the Antichrist (theory is used in a scientific sense, as an idea backed up by data, evidence, and sound reasoning. I hope it exemplifies these things ).
A final, sad note, not perhaps on Antichrist but rather the hardened hearts of the Jewish people: Look what is written below the above passage by Maimonides: "Even Jesus the Nazarene who imagined he would be the Messiah and was killed by the Court was prophesized about by Daniel as it says, “and also the children of the violent among your people will lift themselves up to establish the vision, but they shall stumble” (Daniel 11:14). Was there ever a greater impediment than this one? All the Prophets spoke of the Messiah, Redeemer of Israel and Savior and Gatherer of the Exiles and Strengthener of the Commandments. But this one caused the ruin of Israel by the sword and the dispersal of its remnant and its humiliation and reversed the Torah, and caused most of the world to err and worship a god other than HaShem (G-d)." Ironically, the word "impediment" is also translated in another translation "stumbling block". "For indeed Jews ask for signs and Greeks search for wisdom, but wwe preach Christ crucified, to Jews a stumbling block and to Gentiles foolishness" (1 Cor. 1:22-23 NASB). It almost feels like Caiaphas. Anyway, just a random, somewhat unrelated thought. Pray for the Jewish people.
