Rev 21:1 And I saw a new heaven and a new earth: for the first heaven and the first earth were passed away; and there was no more sea. 2 And I John saw the holy city, new Jerusalem, coming down from God out of heaven, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband. 3 And I heard a great voice out of heaven saying, Behold, the tabernacle of God is with men, and he will dwell with them, and they shall be his people, and God himself shall be with them, and be their God. 4 And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain: for the former things are passed away.
5 And he that sat upon the throne said, Behold, I make all things new. And he said unto me, Write: for these words are true and faithful. 6 And he said unto me, It is done. I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end. I will give unto him that is athirst of the fountain of the water of life freely. 7 He that overcometh shall inherit all things; and I will be his God, and he shall be my son. 8 But the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers, and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone: which is the second death.
Verses 9-23 describe the new Jerusalem which descends from heaven, which has no temple nor sun or moon for God will be there (the temple and the light) Why does the eternal city where God dwells need gates, if in verse 8 all those things that are contrary and enmity with God are in the lake of fire?
24 And the nations of them which are saved shall walk in the light of it: and the kings of the earth do bring their glory and honour into it. 25 And the gates of it shall not be shut at all by day: for there shall be no night there. 26 And they shall bring the glory and honour of the nations into it. 27 And there shall in no wise enter into it any thing that defileth, neither whatsoever worketh abomination, or maketh a lie: but they which are written in the Lamb's book of life.
Again why are there gates on the holy city to keep out things that defile and work abominations, and tell lies if all those are already in the lake of fire? Just a reminder that those who defile, lie and make abomination are in the lake of fire?
22:14 Blessed are they that do his commandments, that they may have right to the tree of life, and may enter in through the gates into the city. 15 For without are dogs, and sorcerers, and whoremongers, and murderers, and idolaters, and whosoever loveth and maketh a lie.
Here we are reminded again? Is the lake of fire just outside the city gates?
14:9 And the third angel followed them, saying with a loud voice, If any man worship the beast and his image, and receive his mark in his forehead, or in his hand, 10 The same shall drink of the wine of the wrath of God, which is poured out without mixture into the cup of his indignation; and he shall be tormented with fire and brimstone in the presence of the holy angels, and in the presence of the Lamb: 11 And the smoke of their torment ascendeth up for ever and ever: and they have no rest day nor night, who worship the beast and his image, and whosoever receiveth the mark of his name. 12 Here is the patience of the saints: here are they that keep the commandments of God, and the faith of Jesus.
If you are tormented outside the city in the second death, how can you be in the presence of the holy angels? It would seem in my limited understanding that the angels are at the gates of the city and therefore those outside the city are in the presence of the holy angels and the Lamb???
I've been trying to reconcile this section in my mind lately and was hoping some others could add to help my understanding. This one section came to mind because of the border wall. Initially I was thinking well there's a wall around the eternal city, so why not one here in America. Please don't debate that here, it was simply to show why or how I began to research the scripture on this item and the highlights above.
The way I read Rev 21 & 22 is this is after the 1000 year reign of Christ, the new city descends from heaven, yet we still see walls, gates and sin outside these gates/walls. Now I have come to understand the traditional background that non-believers are destined for "hell" fire if they die in unbelief or Christ returns. As I actually read through the bible I also find that "hell" is emptied into the lake of fire. Hell is translated or rather interpreted from 3 different words in the NT - Hades, Gehenna & Tartarus.
Hades - properly, the "unseen place," referring to the (invisible) realm in which all the dead reside, i.e. the present dwelling place of all the departed
Tartarus - (2 Pet 2:4) applies as the abyss or holding place, prison (for angels that sinned).
Gehenna - narrow glen to the south of Jerusalem, where the idolatrous Jews offered their children in sacrifice to Molech (2 Chronicles 28:3; 33:6; Jeremiah 7:31; 19:2-6). This valley afterwards became the common receptacle for all the refuse of the city. Here the dead bodies of animals and of criminals, and all kinds of filth, were cast and consumed by fire kept always burning. It thus in process of time became the image of the place of everlasting destruction. In this sense it is used by our Lord in Matthew 5:22, 29, 30; 10:28; 18:9; 23:15, 33; Mark 9:43, 45, 47; Luke 12:5. In these passages, and also in James 3:6, the word is uniformly rendered "hell,"
I'm going to post this now with my thought - First I apologize to those reading as most of the time what is going on in my head does not translate very well to the screen. Second I am not trying to convince anyone of hell, purgatory, annihilation, restoration or any other eternal viewpoint that may be held. Simply I want to know more about this portion of Revelation. My initial reaction to Rev 21 & 22 is that is closely resembles the definition of Gehenna. How this relates to the answer to my question, I do not know. I wanted to open this for discussion and see what other areas of scripture can provide more 'color'.
