There is no possible way for this statement to be true:
James 2:21 Was not Abraham our father justified by works when he offered Isaac his son on the altar? is equal to : "There was not a single act that Abraham did on his own to justify anything. "
This is false! FLAT OUT FALSE!

There is no possible way for this statement to be true: James 2:21 Was not Abraham our father justified by works when he offered Isaac his son on the altar? is equal to : "There was not a single act that Abraham did on his own to justify anything. " This is false! FLAT OUT FALSE! I know. But if you google that same sentence, "There was not a single act that Abraham did on his own to justify anything"We get a whole other cloud of witnesses that are "discussing" the same thing. "And count the patience of our Lord as salvation, just as our beloved brother Paul also wrote to you according to the wisdom given him, as he does in all his letters when he speaks in them of these matters.
"There are some things in them that are hard to understand, which the ignorant and unstable twist to their own destruction, as they do the other Scriptures.
I think Paul was right, but people without the Holy Spirit, took what Paul said and went too far with it. That's probably what Peter was talking about. "But to the one who does not work, but believes in Him who justifies the ungodly, his faith is credited as righteousness.People with counterfeit faith, people with dead faith, might say something like: "well if i'm justified by faith i can live like the world, "IF the faith of those who DO NO WORK, has his faith credited as righteousness, the more work that i do NOT do, will mean the more righteousness that will be credited to me. I'm bad, I'm nationwide. Oh I'm bad, I'm nationwide. Paul's teaching of justification by faith alone was being distorted and misused by those who said, "Well, if we are justified while we are ungodly by faith alone, and this magnifies the Grace of God, then let's just keep sinning, because we are secure anyway and God's grace will get more glory." Some people twist what Paul is saying to their own destruction. All that James seems to be doing is to splash some water into the faces of the lazy, into the lives of the counterfeit faith people, and get the pendulum swung back to where it belongs. I tend to think this thing is so simple, that it's actually complicated. Words can be our friends, or words can be our enemy. The apparent contradiction between Paul and James has, i think, been a known bugaboo throughout the ages. Brighter minds than mine have got headaches over this as they've tried to peer through the glass darkly. It's probably like boraddict said, comparing galvanized pipes with copper pipes, or having faith in the new plastic "pex" piping system, which has been called the greatest revolution in plumbing supply piping. Therefore, i will leave a link that i recommend to some quick materials from John Piper. He has a quick note and a companion audio. Sometimes a jack of all trades like me has to call in the professional plumber. From John Piper:"James notices that in Genesis 22:1 "God tested Abraham" by commanding him to offer up his son Isaac. What was God testing? He was testing his faith. What was he looking for? He was looking for the kind of obedience or works that shows Abraham's faith was not dead faith or devil faith or useless faith. So the issue in James 2:21 (where Abraham offers Isaac) is not the first act of justification that put Abraham in a right standing with God. The issue is the test: was Abraham's faith the living kind of faith that produces the "obedience of faith" or the dead kind that has no effect on life? Does James Contradict Paul?

Random thought..Please dont think this is anything other than questions from me to whomever holds a viewpoint of faith + works. This is to help me understand how you see this topic. - In no way am I as learned in the scriptures as many posting here. One thing I attempt to do in my life is view the scriptures through the world I see today as well as attempt to understand the history behind the holy words I read for context. I have often thought that I needed evidence of my faith, it just makes sense. I believe in Him for salvation so in my mind I should have evidence of what I believe via some form of action. Faith is a verb, an action word so I can agree with you as many here would or should that if we have faith we should exercise this faith, just like Abraham, Rahab, David and as James tells us. We see their faith in action. We also see their lack of faith in action as Fitz points out previously about Ishmael as a lesson to us. But is it that exercising of our faith is that which saves or justifies us? or is it faith in Him and only faith in Him.
So my random thoughts...I don't have the answer to this but I do hope you can express something from your viewpoint on this topic as to make it align with your thoughts process on works evidencing faith.
As I look at the world around me and go about day to day I experience many people, as I'm sure you and others do as well. In my experience I have come across people who are afflicted in their physical bodies, some with MD, CP and other seriously physically debilitating issues, where they cannot really even speak let alone move about on their own. When we encounter people like this how can we view their faith in action? How do physically afflicted people meet this criteria as you understand James spells it out? If people express their faith by works, how does someone who can't speak demonstrate their faith? Worse yet someone who can't walk and barely talk, how do they hand out sandwiches to someone hungry, or share Christ to someone strung out on heroin? They can't. What if a seriously debilitated person DOES believe, repenting of unbelief today but can't even physically say a word about it or move to acknowledge this? How can we say God is fair if you & I (being able) can demonstrate our faith but a quadriplegic cannot? Maybe I am not seeing what a person who is in this physical state can do to express faith by works. If you have an example for me I would appreciate it.

" This is false! FLAT OUT FALSE! No it’s not. It wasn’t just his physical actions that justified him him. You are hung up on that. Bad wording on my part as. I should have clarified it was not justified by his physical works alone. It was his faith and trust in God. Again it is where his heart was in trusting God with doing those actions. He had soooo much faith in God at this point in his life, he was willing to sacrifice his son. And James clarifies this in the very next verses: 22You see that his faith was working with his actions, and his faith was perfected by what he did. (by trusting in God) 23And the Scripture was fulfilled that says, “ Abraham believed God, and it was credited to him as righteousness,”and he was called a friend of God. Let me give a real world example of what this scripture is talking about because so many equate this with the gospel and their salvation and that is not what it is implying at all. The root of the passage is where your heart is in your faith. Look at the Pharisees! The believed in God and did works up to their eyeballs! Jesus ripped them to shreds because they had more faith in themselves because of their works than anything else. Please stop placing James 2 with salvation because he is not stating that works gains or better your salvation or are proof of it. No body can get more salvation. The example I am going to give is something I have witnessed and it is disgusting. These people think they are doing good works for the Lord and PROVING their faith when they are doing the exact opposite. At a local planned parenthood center that I visited for healthcare annually because for a few years I did not have health insurance and this is a service they offer at very low cost for women without health insurance there was a group of women holding up signs saying such loving things as: MURDERER!! BABY KILLER!!! SINNER!!! YOU ARE GOING TO BURN IN HELL!!! JESUS CRIES BECAUSE OF YOU!!! COME TO JESUS BEFORE ITS TO LATE! There was also a variety of signs showing mutilated baby parts. The whole whole thing was absolutely disgusting and the ironic part was this clinic of planned parenthood did not preform abortions at all. Many do not. The angry Christian mob was far away enough off of the property that nothing could be done. Even over 15 years ago I remember thinking that wow is this loving and encouraging behavior to show and possibly persuade someone from making a terrible decision? No! This is dead works! Nothing good comes from doing or acting like these above women do. These women have no faith in the love and forgiveness of God. Their faith is in their signs and condemnation. They are poison. What if someone had a sign that said this instead: JESUS STILL LOVES YOU AND FORGIVES EVEN IF YOU HAVE AN ABORTION. HE IS THERE FOR YOU WHENEVER YOU NEED HIM. ^^^^ That is faith with GOOD works!!! Wouldn’t this be more affective?This sign says from the one holding it that they: Fully believe in the power of what Jesus did on the cross That no matter what we do in our lives, only He is powerful and merciful enough to forgive. That they have absolute faith in God. In real life beyond my example above there are women who are doing things like this and their success rate is massive. Instead of holding signs up for all to see, they slip little notes in car doors or place them under wiper blades either to women going into clinics to get abortions or to the employees themselves preforming the abortions. That is their focus, no matter what they do Jesus loves and forgives and is always their for them. They have built an entire ministry of getting women out of the abortion industry and supporting them afterwards for several months and many avenues of therapy and healthcare. That is the faith + works James is talking about and look at the fruits it produces!! It’s so beautiful how effective this ministry has become and it is because their faith is fully in God and what was done on the cross and resurrection ❤️ I hope this clarifies some things for you. Editing to add: without his full faith and trust in God, Abraham never would have tried to and go through the actions to sacrifice his son. He would have either refused to do it or try to do something in his sons place to spare his life. There were many times Abraham did not have faith and trust in God and relied on his own WORKS based on his faith in himself and the results were not good. If Noah did not have full trust in the Lord he wouldn’t have even attempted to build the ark. The faith resulted in the actions happening.

BUT I believe you "HIT the Nail on the Head Here"
The first one pointing out that ALL PLANNED PARENTHOOD -- do NOT automatically perform or even support Abortions -- yes as a group they tend to -- BUT it is not their main focus!!!
The Second point -- is the one I really wish to highlight ........
A sign saying something like this "JESUS STILL LOVES YOU AND FORGIVES EVEN IF YOU HAVE AN ABORTION. HE IS THERE FOR YOU WHENEVER YOU NEED HIM."
OR even "I am here to Love You and Your Coming Baby .... Let's talk on ways we can show that Love that Jesus has for all life"
========================================================================================
And I might be going out on a limb here ... but I think the same can be said for all sorts of "supposed Protests" Such as PRIDE Parades or Immigration reforms or Welfare reforms......
Displaying negative signs claiming Hell and Death ..... for whatever "SIN Behavior" -- is NOT the way to do things........
Showing LOVE to even the UN_Lovable ..... is the best ...........
Remember, using a paraphrased version of a John Bradford quote --- "There but for the grace of God go I...." says it all
We are ALL SINNERS -- and sins do not have a ranking system ..... all of them a displeasing to God.

@gary said this:
7. While salvation has always been and will always be because of what our Lord Jesus did on the cross, we need to realize that some of the dispensational mechanics do change:
[*]The Church is uniquely gifted with the permanent indwelling of the Holy Spirit via the invisible spiritual baptism we undergo when we believe. [*]This gift was not given before Pentecost in the previous eons and doesn't appear to be given during the Tribulation. [*]For this reason, Tribulation Saints will only be saved by the blood of the Lamb (Rev. 7:14), but their faith in His blood cannot be maintained by the indwelling Spirit. Their faith must endure. This is why two apparent works are added to faith in Revelation for those living through the Tribulation: 1. you must not worship the beast or its image, or 2. take its mark. Will the mark of the beast be a form of mind control or DNA alteration that prevents faith? Who knows, but one thing is clear, no one who takes the mark will repent (Rev. 9:20; 16:9, 11), which is why the principle of sola fide is not broken here. Those who take the mark or worship the beast will not have faith (and if they think they do it certainly will not be the kind of convictional faith that saves). [*]In previous dispensations when the gospel wasn't yet fully revealed, God demanded genuine faith in Him, but not a perfect articulation of what the Church now understands. What saves was still very much what Christ did on the cross, but faith in that cross could not yet be realized. So circumstances changed (Abraham believed in God's promise of offspring - Gen. 15:6; Job believed God would send a redeemer for him - Job 19:25–27; Rahab believed in the God of Israel - Josh. 2:8–11; David believed in God's forgiveness of sins - Ps. 32). Thus those in the Old Testament with genuine faith were ultimately saved regardless of their trespasses of the Law, but all of those with unbelief were cut off and their sins were counted.
=================
Now Gary raises some interesting points here. I do know for sure in the OT times -- the blessing of the Spirit of God (Holy Spirit) would come and go .... for even David pleaded for God not to remove His Spirit when David had Sin and broke fellowship with God.
So we definitely know that the Holy Spirit did not reside continuously with those of Faith in the OT time period......
Apostle Paul tells us that the Holy Spirit resides within ALL Believers .... so we may boldly go before God crying out for Daddy to help us.......
I am NO EXPERT ... and have really not "studied" up on Tribulation Saints -- but my "gut read" is that even in the "FUTURE - Tribulation time period" the Holy Spirit will continue to reside in all His Children.
Here is my thinking (and I could be wrong) but during the Age of Grace (our current time period) the Holy Spirit resides in all of us ......
Now I suspect, Gary's thinking is that the the Holy Spirit is the restrainer that Paul talks about and therefore when Paul talks about the removal of the restrainer -- the removal is for the entire Tribulation time period.... I on the other hand am coming from the perspective that NO ONE comes to the Father (God) unless they are drawn .... which means the Holy Spirit will continue to be active during the Tribulation Period. I believe that also includes His Presences .... There are going to be some scary things happening during that time period ..... and I think any Saint is going to need the Holy Spirit to help them through.
Now just because I think it -- does not make it true.........
HOWEVER; I have been learning something that I think most of us still need to be reminded of from time to time .......
Jesus Loves us SO MUCH -- that while we were STILL SINNERS -- he died for OUR SINS..........
I really do not know all the "INS and OUTS" to the the Trinity ....... but I do know without a DOUBT that GOD IS NOT keeping some kind of CHECK LIST on our behavior (He really is not Santa -- checking a list twice.....)
He wants ALL Humanity to come to HIM -- and ONCE He has us ... HE IS NEVER Letting GO.......

Strong, faithful, true, and righteous are the words from all in this group.
I see your side, fully, truthfully, from the very bottom of my heart I do. I absolutely 100%, no if's, and's, or buts, understand what all of you are saying.
And John Piper's argument is strong, as are ALL of your arguments. But much of it is still opinion, INCLUDING MY OWN! And they are all very, VERY good opinions, do not think for one second I disregard any of them from any of you.
I need to pray on this.
May our Lord God in Heaven bless you all.

Random thought..Please dont think this is anything other than questions from me to whomever holds a viewpoint of faith + works. Very valid statements and questions. My opinion: OT = Faith + works John the Baptist = Faith + works Jesus = Faith + works (especially HIS works on our behalf) Acts 1-9 = Faith + works Acts 10 = Grace thru Faith alone (with a possible unnecessary work of water baptism); Vision of unclean to clean; First Gentiles saved and sealed forever with the Holy Spirit Acts 11 = Grace thru Faith alone ( Paul and Barnabas called out to the Jews first, then to the gentiles ) Paul's letters Grace thru Faith alone (Paul explaining he is sent to the gentile [he still goes to the Jew first] and everyone else to the Jew only) Hebrews = Faith + works James = Faith + works John = Faith + works Peter = Faith + works Jude = Faith + works Revelation = Faith + works Why do I believe this? Other than reading about the physical works obeying/disobeying God? Because I believe with all of my heart that the book of Acts, from beginning to end, is the physical manifestation of Deuteronomy 32! The Israeli people just had no faith! This royally ticked off God our Father! Paul quoted Dueteronomy 32 in Romans: Dueteronomy 32 20 And He said: ‘I will hide My face from them, I will see what their end will be, For they are a perverse generation, Children in whom is no faith. 21 They have provoked Me to jealousy by what is not God; They have moved Me to anger by their foolish idols. But I will provoke them to jealousy by those who are not a nation; I will move them to anger by a foolish nation. Throughout the entire old testament, some people have physically worked to show their faith to God, thus their faith being justified. But the people of Israel wouldn't believe. They just wouldn't. Works is all they did. Day in and day out. Year after year. So God is going to make them jealous by granting HIS GRACE WITHOUT WORKS to those who are not a nation! Us! Gentiles! Unclean! Hopeless people without the law, no God, just roaming about like dogs awaiting judgement. UNJUST! And when we, the unjust, imputed with His righteousness without any works to justify it, leave in the rapture, welcome back to the world of faith + works.... prepare for your mark or your beheading! Romans 10:19 But I say, did Israel not know? First Moses says: “I will provoke you to jealousy by those who are not a nation, I will move you to anger by a foolish nation.” 20 But Isaiah is very bold and says: “I was found by those who did not seek Me; I was made manifest to those who did not ask for Me.” That's us! ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- All of this, my opinion of course.... LOL :-D ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- So mike, To answer your questions through my dark-glassed opinion, it's His Grace thru our faith alone. No works necessary while we are here. But if you are able, and the opportunity presents itself, thru your love, why not? God know's your heart. If you sin while a believer, it has repercussions. Loss of rewards, but not your salvation. It is my absolute humble opinion that non-Pauline books argue otherwise. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- And this is where I will continue to pray for God to show me the truth in His word. Without my, or anyone's opinion on top.

Ok, After a nice study of James and Hebrews together, just reading it plainly... no opinions, no human interactions, just reading the chapters... I am now even more convinced than I was before that those books are not for the Church age of Grace thru faith alone. I completely forgot about Hebrews Chapter 10 (especially the bottom half). I was already pretty convinced with Hebrews 6 on losing salvation you can't get it back. Chapter 10 sealed the deal for me. I don't see how one could fit that chapter into a "Grace thru faith only" and "sealed for eternity with the Holy Spirit" doctrine. James 1/2 and Hebrews 6/10 fall right in line with each other perfectly when read out loud with no opinions applied to them from myself or listening to others. And when I read James 2:18 again, I see what seems to me, boasting of works from one man to another man, and not to God. Why should one man ever have to boast of his works to another man? Anyway, my belief, as I described it to mike above, is unchanged. You guys/gals have been nothing but loving with me and I thank you for it. This isn't a salvation issue. This is just my own personal understanding when I study the Word for myself. If you find different understandings and details, wonderful! Heaven and earth will be that much better with you present, of that I have no doubts! God Bless!

EDIT - for some reason the video starts around the 45 minute mark...rewind to the beginning Yea, I just watched this one. Looks good to me. One minor thing I noted around the 54 minute mark in the video is that, yes, Grace was shown to Paul in Acts 9, but that is not when Paul started dealing with gentiles yet. The visitation of the angel to the Roman gentile plus Peter's vision in Acts 10 is when the first case of gentiles are shown Grace from God. Grace for gentiles did actually start with Peter first. So yea, Grace in Acts 9 is likely a good starting point... LOL... God had to stop the man from killing believers. I'll go with that. I'm not going to nit-pick that little detail.

VET - I am listening to the various videos this man put on YouTube. As a "linear thinker" the teaching here is very helpful to me for understanding as are those he produced on Hebrews, James & Peter...Although I may not 100% agree with everything he says, it is very helpful. We should always test what others say.
EDIT - this is also helping me better understand why there is a "replacement theology" and why it is wrong.
