I was going to reply to the parable of the 10 virgins started by boraddict and bring in the observation that that single parable is actually part of two others at the minimum. Call it a context argument, perhaps. I felt my point of view would detach from her point of it being a faith teaching, which I will not argue against. In fact one could equate that 5 of the virgins had enough faith that kept it available in times of need. Faith is not always something tangible, that one can buy, or have by methods...it is a state of being..which the other 5 thought they could share of or get by purchase (works)..
My point is that Jesus thru all His parables is trying to drive home the point of what it means to be Kingdom heirs, members, servants of, etc...Yes servants.. I am not sure of how many specific parables of the Kingdom He taught, but there is one common phrase the rings throughout several of them: those who do not enter will experience a weeping and gnashing of teeth, a darkness, which is odd to say since there is also a furnace of fire, which would emit some type of light, no?
But we know that the Word has numerous teachings about being apart from God, walking in darkness and not Light. So this furnace fire is not the same fire that comes to our minds, like one at a campsite or stove, nor is the darkness, like being in a cave without a flashlight..I believe these elements to be the spiritual condition of the one's heart. We are told this by Jesus himself as to why He used parables in the first place:
19“When anyone hears the word of the kingdom and does not understand it, the evil one comes and snatches away what has been sown in his heart. (matt 13)
This phrase alone could be applied to the 10 virgins. The virgins knowing that they do not know when the bridegroom would call them, should know that they would need to be prepared for whatever circumstances as they are at HIS beck and call. Those not prepared (for the Kingdom) will find themselves busy with other things of the world, distractions, or futile attempts to seek favor by works of the flesh.. I believe many of the parables are actually teaching the flesh works verses spiritual "works"
(especially the parable of the seed)
But what is gnashing of teeth anyways?
In the parables of Matt and Luke Strong's uses the word brugmos and it is used with this added greek word τῶν, denoting the extreme anguish and utter despair of men consigned to condemnation of unknown ending..
with weeping it is the word klauthmos meaning crying lamenting, and this from strongs; bitter grief that springs from feeling utterly hopeless. 2805 /klauthmós ("wailing") is usually accompanied by shrieks, brought on by uncontainable emotional (psychological) pain.
So we see there comes a state of being over someone who is in that darkness, the result is despair and emotional pain.
So when we go back to the 10 virgins, it is not so much the event itself of keeping a lamp lit, or watching, but rather what is keeping your heart prepared for the Lord because you Love Him and want to obey His commandments. there is a parable that leads to the 10 virgins and this is the parable of the faithful slave..
45“Who then is the faithful and sensible slave whom his master put in charge of his household (gave him a command) to give them their food at the proper time?
46“Blessed is that slave whom his master finds so doing when he comes.
47“Truly I say to you that he will put him in charge of all his possessions.
48“But if that evil slave says in his heart, ‘My master is not coming for a long time,’
49and begins to beat his fellow slaves and eat and drink with drunkards;
50the master of that slave will come on a day when he does not expect him and at an hour which he does not know,
51and will cut him in pieces and assign him a place with the hypocrites; in that place there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.
1“Then the kingdom of heaven will be comparable to ten virgins, who took their lamps and went out to meet the bridegroom.
2“Five of them were foolish, and five were prudent....
11“Later the other virgins (the ones who did not have enough) also came, saying, ‘Lord, lord, open up for us.’
12“But he answered, ‘Truly I say to you, I do not know you.’
13“Be on the alert then, for you do not know the day nor the hour.
and Jesus goes on to drive the point home of the the parable of the Talents where the one with the least did not even try to increase his portion alotted, but rather buried it to give it back. and Jesus said of this slave :
29“For to everyone who has, more shall be given, and he will have an abundance; but from the one who does not have, even what he does have shall be taken away. 30“Throw out the worthless slave into the outer darkness; in that place there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.
has what? money? possessions? beauty? things of this world?
We can so easily make this a teaching about works, and also a teaching that God is evil or unfair, but these parables were spoken when? If you back up to Matt 24 these parables come after He talked about the tribulation of those days and His Coming. I think like the wheat and the tares, these parables are about those who are ready to enter the Kingdom as they have become found righteous by virtue of what we know causes a person to be counted righteous..that obedience to Faith (steadfast hope for something unseen, add any of the descriptions of what is counted as righteousness here:____________________________________________________________________ )
41“The Son of Man will send forth His angels, and they will gather (thresh) out of His kingdom all stumbling blocks, and those who commit lawlessness, 42and will throw them into the furnace of fire; in that place there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth. 43“Then THE RIGHTEOUS WILL SHINE FORTH AS THE SUN in the kingdom of their Father. He who has ears, let him hear.
We should rejoice in this that those in the Kingdom will not have to struggle anymore with our flesh! Praise God!
it seems Jesus talked about the wheat and the tares and said they should grow together until the harvest...and what is the first process?
30‘Allow both to grow together until the harvest; and in the time of the harvest I will say to the reapers, “First gather up the tares and bind them in bundles to burn them up
I believe this is also describing the fall of the Iron/Clay kingdom so that the Stone Kingdom can take over. The point being that the Kingdom of God is at hand!! Spiritually available right now! and very soon to be manifested where one will experience a restored glory where we will BE with Jesus having put on immortality, unashamed beacons of light!
Repentance to me is not working to rid yourself of sinning, but resting from this fleshly work to appease God for one thing, and(spiritually)rest in that we are His handiwork, that all creation is His to control and He is sovereign over all. He is the Lord of Lords! the King of kings! to whom we give honor and thanks and praise! It is a humbling experience this repentant thing..like a surrendering.. When we surrender to Him,and not the world, so much is given by Him, and we are not frustrated, grinding our teeth in opposition, lamenting over fairness or works or judging others, or anxious over the passing of dates...
however, do come quickly Lord!

The baptism of spirit and fire is ongoing and is refining those who are repentant even today - the kingdom is at hand. It is close to us. It is within us. It is upon us. But when we resist it by claiming our own lordship, by claiming our own ability to do good works we are not repentant. It is not the kingdom of man. It is the Kingdom of God.
The kingdom of God is not something we are waiting for. Certainly, it will manifest more physically in the near future. But it is currently real in the spirit and has been since Gen 1:1. It is this kingdom that we must walk in while still in this world, but it is also this kingdom that we are preparing to be part of in the physical as well.
