I'm going to throw something into this fray. I am not advocating for the Pope here either but I ask the question to simply see how others think/feel about this. How is the alleged quote by the Pope any different than that of conditionalism or annihilationism?
EDIT - my intent is not to open a dialogue about conditionalism/annihilationism (and derail the thread) but to compare what the Pope said to current positions held in Christiandom at large.

mike, that was my thought, too. I'm sure there is more to what he said. We only get a little snippet of the Pope's thoughts in those words. Maybe he is talking annihiliationism / conditionalism or maybe he is saying there is no hell. However, the Pope has said some interesting and non-Biblical things in the past.
