Is the temple sacrifice supposed to be INSIDE the temple or just outside of it?

There was an alter where sacrifices would take place.

But it was too small for all the animals being sacrificed so he setup another alter in the middle court outside of the temple. You can read about it in 1 Kings 8. The sacrifices are mentioned starting at verse 62-64.
