Picked up the book “God Answers” by John Burman.
Only part way through it, so not ready to recommend or not recommend it…..
Will say there is a lot of ”MEAT” in it – meaning what he says does give the reader a lot of thought material to “chew on for a bit”.
Already found a few things I disagree with him on – one being the “Nephilim” – which he seems to treat as a fable to scare children… my take being that if the Bible says there were Nephilim in the land – both before and after the flood – then they are “there” whether we see hard evidence for it today or not.
One thing he did say, which seems to have merit – is his discussion of PRIDE. In fact this appears one of his main premises – returning over and over again – and I am roughly 1/3 of the way through the book.
When one ignores a homeless person as they pass by on the street, or curses at an automobile operator who cuts one off on the freeway, or winces when another church member sings a hymn off-key then that one person is operating out of a SIN OF PRIDE.
You see each and every one of these people listed above is someone that Jesus Christ suffered and died for – exactly the same as He did for you and me.
It is the Sin of Pride, which allows one to walk by a homeless individual without at least giving them a smile and a greeting …..
It is the Sin of Pride, which allows one to feel anger at someone who unfairly used the road.
It is the Sin of Pride, which allows one to sneer at a sister or brother about their singing attempts.
This really hit home for me; how often does one go around -- Hey the Son of God suffered and died (and was raise again) for that person right over there --- and I have not gone over and shared the “good news” with them? Talked to them? Offered to help meet some of their needs….
Looking at it like this is a bit of “eye-opening for me”…..
Anyone else out there – not looking at the world – with this perspective?

Guilty. But I'm seeing this sin in myself more and more as Jesus strips away more and more of the me in me to replace it with more of Him.
Thanks Kjs...great post!

A couple things.
Proverbs 16:18-Pride goeth before destruction, and an haughty spirit before a fall.
Pick someone to help long term and do what you can for them. They may need to be taken to a doctor appointment, to the store, just someone to talk to, a smile, something fixed, painted or even grass cut or driveway shoveled, a meal cooked. Many things cost nothing but your time. Some cost gas or a few dollars which God seems to always provide.
Never expect anything in return and do it with a cheerful heart, compassion and love. If every family picked someone think how much better things would be.
A few suggestions of people to help: An older couple A widow or widower A single mom or dad A vet

Great ideas nanaWhat has "hit me the most" is just such a simple concept (that I knew in the back of my mind) .... What Jesus Christ DID -- HE DID FOR ALL.... remember what Paul says in Romans ... WHILE we were yet sinners, Jesus is in the process of "FIXING THINGS".... But kind of knowing that in my mind .... got turned upside down when it was SPELLED out for me........ Hey, that homeless person -- is someone Jesus Loved so much that He suffered and died for..... Hey, the reckless driver who cut you off -- is someone Jesus Loved so much that He suffered and died for..... I just hope to remember the lesson well ..... whoever I interact with ... is another person who Jesus Dies for...... Maybe keeping that in my thoughts will help keep me from ignoring or bickering with those around me...........

how easily we get distracted from that KJS! I know I have had similar thoughts but as soon as some of things distract me, I lose focus of Him and switch to me! Thanks for reminding me of how miserable we are without Him

We are told to comfort the sick, visit the people in jail, help the widow and so on. When we look at other peoples needs we realize they are just like us. Plus it gives you an open door to share the gospel. We are to walk the talk.

Wow, that's something very challenging to me. I've definitely been guilty of that before. When you break it down, I bet pride is the source of a lot of the frequent sins in our lives.

Just thinking about this subject on my way to the grocery store this morning. I often talk to the Lord while driving, I was saying to Him that I want to walk in His love and shine forth His light in the darkness of this world, but how I so often fail to do so because I am selfish, and selfishness is just another form of pride. I am selfish with my time and so often when I do acts of kindness for others I do it because I feel obligated, or do so grudgingly, expecting something from them in return. This is where I feel I fail most often, I am willing to do for others, and I do, but far too often I do so with a bad attitude. I want to feel the Joy of Christ instead! Our flesh is by nature drawn into the shadows, I know for me, I often take the path that leads to my own comfort first. I asked the Lord to clean up my attitude, to strengthen me in my faith so that I might do what is pleasing to Him joyfully and willingly. I was convicted of my own pride and confessed this before God.
I am thinking I need to schedule acts of kindness toward others outside my immediate family. If I really want to overcome my flesh, I need to "practice" what the Lord has told me is pleasing to Him. Start small, put it on the calendar, maybe once a month and grow from there. I think the more you put it into practice the easier it becomes, and the less inclined you are to foster the ways of the flesh.
What do you all think? Anyone want to join me in this endeavor?

rt My initial thought is "yes i want to a should be doing this" and immediately my flesh is screaming at me "when you gonna do that", "wheres the time", "what will you do" and so on...So now I know I should do something, not sure what but something!

rtYou may check into some of the churches and town-centers in your area to see if there is already monthly events scheduled. For example the rec-center in our area gives out bags of groceries once a month; it has grown so large that they are helping 300 to 500 families monthly -- usually with at least one bag of groceries (sometimes 2 or 3 depending on family size) and a box of vegetables -- with whatever is in season -- potatoes, yams, cabbage, onions, carrots, corn.... and once in awhile even meats (Chicken, Fish, Beef).... Some schools do drives just before one of their big breaks -- where food (mainly snack type) and toiletries are given to the kids before the break. There are also women shelters in some areas (which take in women and kids) --- and depend on various churches in the area to take a "night" to feed all in the shelter an evening meal (believe me doing one evening meal per month for 80 to 100 people is rough). The point I am trying to make is there may already programs in place -- that are always in desperate need of volunteers to help organize and work these events. So do not think you have to start up something on your own.
