A little background info…I grew up in the construction business. Dad was a custom home builder and I was expected to work for him during my summer vacations. I started out in the trenches as chief of the clean-up crew. A crew of one. It was my job to get all of that construction debris into a dumpster or truck to be hauled away.
In subsequent years I graduated to working with various skilled tradesmen, framing carpenters, electricians, plumbers, cabinet makers and after 4 years of drafting classes in high school, I became a draftsman in the office in 1981. These were the “old days” when drafting was done on a board, on vellum, using a pencil with a t-square or parallel bar, triangles, etc.
This early training led me to work for builders and architects for the first 20 years of my adult life. By 1994 it was obvious that I was destined to become a dinosaur and un-employable if I didn’t learn how to use a computer and AutoCAD. I didn’t realize how important that move would be for me later on.
I became an expert using Autodesk’s AutoCAD and their other architectural software and in 2000, I was offered the dream job. Autodesk, Inc. hired me to work on their flagship architectural product as a QA Analyst. I spent the next 15 years with them before leaving to run my own business, which I had started in 2013, full-time. Working for a big high-tech company, I became deeply immersed computer technology. Deep. Everything was done on a computer. “Work” happened via email…send an email…stuff got done. I learned about networks, servers, the “cloud” and a plethora of other computer-based technologies.
When the Social Media wave hit, for me, it was natural to fall right in to it. Facebook, Twitter, etc. But almost immediately, I could see the potential for this to literally change the world and it scared me enough that I swore I would not become deeply engrossed in it. Ha! I got sucked in just like everyone else.
Leaving Autodesk to run my business full-time was a blessing on this front. As a business owner, I realized that all of my customer’s money was green. So gone were the days when I could wear my political leanings on my sleeve. No longer could I openly voice my opinion on the various cultural issues raging in the news. I could not afford to alienate even one customer.
So, I pretty much stopped posting, other than stuff regarding the most innocuous of subjects. Happy Birthday! Or “liking” some friend’s kid graduating HS or getting married. The only thing I actively posted were things promoting my business. Pulling back was quite a blessing for my personal life and I do not miss the time suck or the nasty debates I used to become embroiled in.
Not passing judgement on anyone who uses social media to any degree. But I read this opinion article (linked below) tonight and it made me wonder…what does social media look like during the Tribulation? How does the beast system use it to control/surveil? I think most of us believe that society quickly breaks down to an extent that many (or most) don’t even have electricity, much less an internet connection. But it is possible that during the first 42 months, some semblance of “normal” life continues after the rapture. There may be mass chaos directly afterward, but it is possible that some normalcy returns for a short time. Not sure.
Amazing how my life has spanned from the dark ages to the 21st Century future I could have never imagined when I graduated high school.
Anyway, I’d be interested to hear your take on it, and I offer the article…it’s a good read.
