We just had a meteor flash and break apart in our skies here and rumble enough to shake my house. It sounded like someone was on our roof pounding with a sledge hammer very quickly and very hard. I thought maybe a minor earthquake had happened, but nothing was showing on usgs. When I find a video I will post it. Sounds like it lit up the whole sky.

so my question is, they could not see this meteor approaching earth from space before hand? A lot of times no. This one probably wasn't that big. If they are not reflective or lighter in color they cannot see them until they are very very close and that is usually only if they are a bigger rock. If the meteor consists of a darker metal or elements, like iron, they are very dark and give off no heat, so infrared does not pick them up either. It's like trying to pick out black shapes against a black background.
