Zechariah 12Most prophets compartmentalize their “jerusalems”. They will talk about New Jerusalem in one passage and physical Jerusalem in a different passage. They never call her New Jerusalem, though. Zechariah is less distinct. He mixes the Jerusalem’s around however he wishes. So it can become difficult to determine the difference in his writing more so than in other prophets.
Another thing to keep in mind, God inspired these men to write what they wrote, but they, themselves, may not have understood the coming New Jerusalem and so the way God gave them the message about New Jerusalem is by couching it within a message about physical Jerusalem and physical families or tribes.
Have you ever noticed how one prophet will say that Jerusalem is a curse and another will call her a blessing?
Isa 62:7 And give Him no rest until He establishes And makes Jerusalem a praise in the earth.
Jer 26:6 then I will make this house like Shiloh, and this city I will make a curse to all the nations of the earth. [speaking of Jerusalem]
This is because these passages are about ywo different Jerusalems.
Let’s take a look at Zechariah 12. Right off we see something strange.
Zec 12:1 The burden of the word of the LORD concerning Israel. Thus declares the LORD who stretches out the heavens, lays the foundation of the earth, and forms the spirit of man within him,
Zec 12:2 "Behold, I am going to make Jerusalem a cup that causes reeling to all the peoples around; and when the siege is against Jerusalem, it will also be against Judah.
This is a message to Israel. But it is about two entities - Judah and Jerusalem and really a third entity - the inhabitants of Jerusalem. And a fourth that we will see The House of David. (We’ll see this shortly). Normally, we would just ignore this because we have not understood these differences - but now, because of our brief history lesson we realize that Zechariah is writing this around 520-510 BC. Israel was taken captive in 721 BC and so they have been gone for about 210 years at this point. A few of them have returned, because we see this:
Dan 9:7 "Righteousness belongs to You, O Lord, but to us open shame, as it is this day—to the men of Judah, the inhabitants of Jerusalem and all Israel, those who are nearby and those who are far away in all the countries to which You have driven them, because of their unfaithful deeds which they have committed against You.
This confirms that some have rejoined Judah - But this also shows that most have not returned. Are we then to believe that Zechariah is writing this to “those who are far away in all the countries to which God has driven them” ? Maybe, but we may already begin to assume that this is a different Israel. Now Zechariah himself my not understand this, he is writing the words he was told to write.
Zec 12:3 "It will come about in that day that I will make Jerusalem a heavy stone for all the peoples; all who lift it will be severely injured. And all the nations of the earth will be gathered against it.
So we have some criteria here - All nations of the earth will be gathered against Jerusalem. If we want to think physically then it can’t be some, but all. Now I am willing to be reasonable here. If every nation but Guatemala are gathered - I think we can say that fits. Or, for instance, if the United Nations is gathered, then they represent all nations of the world. But, it cannot just be a coalition of 3 or 10 or even 50 countries.
Zec 12:4 "In that day," declares the LORD, "I will strike every horse with bewilderment and his rider with madness. But I will watch over the house of Judah, while I strike every horse of the peoples with blindness.
Zec 12:5 "Then the clans of Judah will say in their hearts, 'A strong support for us are the inhabitants of Jerusalem through the LORD of hosts, their God.'
We see there the idea that there are really two sieges happening - one against Jerusalem, and one against Judah. But Judah is not living in Jerusalem, because they are distinguished from the inhabitants of Jerusalem. As a matter of fact, it seems like Judah is happy to have the support of the inhabitants of Jerusalem. Moreover, the inhabitants of Jerusalem are people of the Lord. Judah notices this support when God confuses the horses and the riders. This should make us think, aren't Judah inhabiting Jerusalem right now? So why are the Judah folks in this passage different than those inhabiting Jerusalem.
Zec 12:6 "In that day I will make the clans of Judah like a firepot among pieces of wood and a flaming torch among sheaves, so they will consume on the right hand and on the left all the surrounding peoples, while the inhabitants of Jerusalem again dwell on their own sites in Jerusalem.
Judah then, will become filled with the spirit and become like fire as they consume on the left and the right. Judah begins here - to pick up the work of the inhabitants of Jerusalem, who seem to go back "home."
Zec 12:7 "The LORD also will save the tents of Judah first, so that the glory of the house of David and the glory of the inhabitants of Jerusalem will not be magnified above Judah.
Zec 12:8 "In that day the LORD will defend the inhabitants of Jerusalem, and the one who is feeble among them in that day will be like David, and the house of David will be like God, like the angel of the LORD before them.
Zec 12:9 "And in that day I will set about to destroy all the nations that come against Jerusalem.
Here again, we see a difference between those living in Judah and those living Jerusalem and, I believe another group called, the house of David. And an odd thing is said, that the glory of the inhabitants of Jerusalem, and the glory of the house of david, will not be greater than the glory of Judah. We also see another distinction - the inhabitant of Jerusalem will be strong like David, and the house of David will be like God - like the angel of the Lord before them!
So, we have, a formation - House of David leading inhabitants of Jerusalem - all in support of Judah.
We then see that all nations coming against Jerusalem will be destroyed. And the tents of Judah will be saved first.
Zec 12:10 "I will pour out on the house of David and on the inhabitants of Jerusalem, the Spirit of grace and of supplication, so that they will look on Me whom they have pierced; and they will mourn for Him, as one mourns for an only son, and they will weep bitterly over Him like the bitter weeping over a firstborn.
Rev 1:6 and He has made us to be a kingdom, priests to His God and Father—to Him be the glory and the dominion forever and ever. Amen.
Rev 1:7 BEHOLD, HE IS COMING WITH THE CLOUDS, and every eye will see Him, even those who pierced Him; and all the tribes of the earth will mourn over Him. So it is to be. Amen.
Mat 24:29 "But immediately after the tribulation of those days THE SUN WILL BE DARKENED, AND THE MOON WILL NOT GIVE ITS LIGHT, AND THE STARS WILL FALL from the sky, and the powers of the heavens will be shaken.
Mat 24:30 "And then the sign of the Son of Man will appear in the sky, and then all the tribes of the earth will mourn, and they will see the SON OF MAN COMING ON THE CLOUDS OF THE SKY with power and great glory.
Mat 24:31 "And He will send forth His angels with A GREAT TRUMPET and THEY WILL GATHER TOGETHER His elect from the four winds, from one end of the sky to the other.
Hey, what is the kingdom? US!
Zechariah, Jesus, and John here are all seeing the same thing. A day is coming when all will look upon Christ, whom they have pierced, and weep for what they have done. Some want to pretend that this applies only to the Jews, or the Roman soldiers who did the actual piercing. But my friends, we have all taken a good grip on the hammer, the spike, and the sword. My fingerprints, mixed with my savior’s blood, stain the weapons of His piercing. They are placed alongside Caiaphas’, Stalin’ s, Hitler’s, and yours. All the families of the earth will mourn that day.
Also, anyone that physically pierced Jesus is dead, and people who teach that this is the Jews believe Jesus will return before the unsaved Jews are raised from the dead - so, how could they that pierced Him actually see Him at that point? Only some genetic ancestor could see Him - what good does that do? That can't make the dead jewish piercer mourn.
Zec 12:11 "In that day there will be great mourning in Jerusalem, like the mourning of Hadadrimmon in the plain of Megiddo.
Zec 12:12 "The land will mourn, every family by itself; the family of the house of David by itself and their wives by themselves; the family of the house of Nathan by itself and their wives by themselves;
Zec 12:13 the family of the house of Levi by itself and their wives by themselves; the family of the Shimeites by itself and their wives by themselves;
Zec 12:14 all the families that remain, every family by itself and their wives by themselves.
This seems to imply that this event will take place around the Day of Atonement as it was customary for the husbands and wives to mourn separately as they considered their sins.
Now, I would venture to say, that you have never seen these divisions be taught by any of the prophecy teachers. Typically, the message is pretty simple:
Hopefully, by now, you see how silly that sounds on the surface. The ones that don’t know Christ, have not been trained how to walk in faith are going to setup the kingdom of God on earth, while those that had faith in the savior and trained through their Pentecost experience are going to just hang out? Beyond that though, for this to be about the physical Jerusalem and Judah, it would need to have All nations come against modern Israel, and besiege her. It would also need to have all of modern Israel move out of Jerusalem and have only Christians move into Jerusalem. Not Muslims, not Jews. Just Christians. Then the Christians would have to somehow help Judah by being led by the House of David like the angel of God going before them.
Does that match Israel and Jerusalem today? It clearly does not. Don’t we feel that we should understand who these various groups are and why Zechariah is make distinctions that our teachers are not making?
This is a message to Israel about Judah, Inhabitants of Jerusalem, and the House of David.
I can give you my assessment -
but the important thing here is to realize that whatever else you have heard or thought about this passage - now you know there is more going on here and that what you thought you know is likely not fully describing the situation. This passage also demonstrates how, if one does not have a background in the Gospel of the Kingdom and the Gospel of Peace - this passage may not make sense at all. I think an honest read of 12:5 by itself, should call into doubt our traditional understanding of this passage.
Zec 12:5 "Then the clans of Judah will say in their hearts, 'A strong support for us are the inhabitants of Jerusalem through the LORD of hosts, their God.'
Today’s Judah inhabits Jerusalem. Why does this passage seem to separate Judah from the inhabitants of Jerusalem? It can’t be talking about he Arabs that live in Jerusalem because their god is not the Lord. This, by itself, should make us go back to the drawing board.
Here is my interpretation, but you do not need to agree with this in order to see that Zech. 12 has been misinterpreted for quite some time:
Jerusalem = Heavenly Jerusalem
House of David = Barley - Sons of God
Inhabitants of Jerusalem = Wheat - Christians
Judah = Those who, recently bowed their knee and believed, but have not experienced Pentecost - basically, they are coming into Christ and gaining citizenship.
Nations = Everything that is not part of the kingdom of God
The passage is not meant to be an extremely time sensitive prophecy. But rather a general statement of the situation. Notice, verse 9 says, “In that day, I will set about to destroy….” It is not an instantaneous destruction. It is something that will take a while. And while this is happening, as the nations are against the kingdom of God, which they are now and always have been. They encircle and besiege the believers and the recent converts.
Now -
put out of your mind an actual city with actual walls and actual tents. Imagine the living Jerusalem, each of us a stone. As the wheat and the barley minister to the nations, little by little the nations join Judah and as they do they are supported by the wheat and the barley with the barley leading the way and administering the process. But clearly, God does not intend the barley or the wheat to have more glory than the new converts into Judah. This is not a greater than thou situation. This process will take a long time, so God sets about to destroy the nations … but it is a process. It is talking about this time period:
Mat 13:31 He presented another parable to them, saying, "The kingdom of heaven is like a mustard seed, which a man took and sowed in his field;
Mat 13:32 and this is smaller than all other seeds, but when it is full grown, it is larger than the garden plants and becomes a tree, so that THE BIRDS OF THE AIR come and NEST IN ITS BRANCHES."
Mat 13:33 He spoke another parable to them, "The kingdom of heaven is like leaven, which a woman took and hid in three pecks of flour until it was all leavened."
This is the time period during which some of you have spoken about healing the nations. Jesus will have taught us a great many natural remedies as Big Pharma disappears and the fruit of the earth heal. Zechariah says “destroy” because he is prophesying in the physical, but the actual destruction is with the sword of the Spirit and it destroys the works of the nations in their efforts against Judah. They will become confused and blind and bewildered as they experience “Christ in you”, and they will throw down their “arms” and join Judah. Then end result will be:
Hab 2:14 "For the earth will be filled With the knowledge of the glory of the LORD, As the waters cover the sea.
My understanding is that the sea is completely covered by water.
Why is this a message to Israel? Because it all begins with the revealing of the Sons of God. But wait - Israel is sonship, but Judah (house of david) is kingship. How can the sons of God be both? Great question and it shows you are paying attention! When Christ returns He will join the mandates again that have been separated sense Joseph and Judah. All mandates will be fulfilled in Christ and merged into one united Kingdom. Israel and the House of David will be one kingdom - ruled by one King.
