A Biblical history of the tabernacle/temple of God
1. The original Tabernacle/temple of God
The very first temple of God to exist was the heavenly one. We see evidence of this in Exodus 25 and again in the New Testament in Hebrews 8 and later yet again in Revelation 4 when the Apostle John is called up into it. It’s implications will be discussed later on.
As we see from these passages Moses was instructed to construct a tabernacle and its furnishings and was shown a pattern which he was to observe. This pattern reflected what was in the original tabernacle, the heavenly one. We get an actual glimpse into the heavenly tabernacle in Revelation 4, when John is called up into it to receive the revelation of Jesus Christ.
We see from John’s description glimpses of the pattern that served for the construction of the Tabernacle which Moses was commanded by God to construct.
We see the throne of God, whose footstool was the Ark of the Covenant and the mercy seat which was on it along with the Cherubim.
We see the seven lamps of fire
We see the altar of incense
We also see the laver or what was later called the “sea” in Solomon's temple
Lastly we see the incense
All of these things that John saw and recorded in Revelation 4 were in the heavenly Tabernacle and served as the pattern for Moses in the construction of the first earthly tabernacle. And the reason God wanted Moses to construct it was as follows:
God wished to dwell among them and as Exodus 25:22 says, there He would meet with them and speak with them. The earthly tabernacle was a meeting place for Israel to meet with and hear from their God. It was a tabernacle or tent that they could disassemble and take with them throughout their wilderness wanderings. There were other articles created according to the pattern and there were also priests appointed to serve within it.
We also know that the seat of God’s throne is in the heavenly tabernacle, and the earthly tabernacle and temple served as the footstool of His throne

Exodus 25:8–9
8 “Let them construct a sanctuary for Me, that I may dwell among them.
9 “According to all that I am going to show you, as the pattern of the tabernacle and the pattern of all its furniture, just so you shall construct it.
8 “Let them construct a sanctuary for Me, that I may dwell among them.
9 “According to all that I am going to show you, as the pattern of the tabernacle and the pattern of all its furniture, just so you shall construct it.
Acts 7:44
44 “Our fathers had the tabernacle of testimony in the wilderness, just as He who spoke to Moses directed him to make it according to the pattern which he had seen.
44 “Our fathers had the tabernacle of testimony in the wilderness, just as He who spoke to Moses directed him to make it according to the pattern which he had seen.
Hebrews 8:1–5
1 Now the main point in what has been said is this: we have such a high priest, who has taken His seat at the right hand of the throne of the Majesty in the heavens,
2 a minister in the sanctuary and in the true tabernacle, which the Lord pitched, not man.
3 For every high priest is appointed to offer both gifts and sacrifices; so it is necessary that this high priest also have something to offer.
4 Now if He were on earth, He would not be a priest at all, since there are those who offer the gifts according to the Law;
5 who serve a copy and shadow of the heavenly things, just as Moses was warned by God when he was about to erect the tabernacle; for, “SEE,” He says, “THAT YOU MAKE all things ACCORDING TO THE PATTERN WHICH WAS SHOWN YOU ON THE MOUNTAIN.”

Hebrews 9:11–12
11 But when Christ appeared as a high priest of the good things to come, He entered through the greater and more perfect tabernacle, not made with hands, that is to say, not of this creation;
12 and not through the blood of goats and calves, but through His own blood, He entered the holy place once for all, having obtained eternal redemption.

Revelation 11:19
19 And the temple of God which is in heaven was opened; and the ark of His covenant appeared in His temple, and there were flashes of lightning and sounds and peals of thunder and an earthquake and a great hailstorm.

Revelation 15:5
5 After these things I looked, and the temple of the tabernacle of testimony in heaven was opened,

Revelation 4:2–6
2 Immediately I was in the Spirit; and behold, a throne was standing in heaven, and One sitting on the throne.
3 And He who was sitting was like a jasper stone and a sardius in appearance; and there was a rainbow around the throne, like an emerald in appearance.
4 Around the throne were twenty-four thrones; and upon the thrones I saw twenty-four elders sitting, clothed in white garments, and golden crowns on their heads.
5 Out from the throne come flashes of lightning and sounds and peals of thunder. And there were seven lamps of fire burning before the throne, which are the seven Spirits of God;
6 and before the throne there was something like a sea of glass, like crystal; and in the center and around the throne, four living creatures full of eyes in front and behind.

Revelation 5:8
8 When He had taken the book, the four living creatures and the twenty-four elders fell down before the Lamb, each one holding a harp and golden bowls full of incense, which are the prayers of the saints.

Revelation 6:9
9 When the Lamb broke the fifth seal, I saw underneath the altar the souls of those who had been slain because of the word of God, and because of the testimony which they had maintained;

4 It stood on twelve oxen, three facing the north, three facing west, three facing south and three facing east; and the sea was set on top of them and all their hindquarters turned inwards.
5 It was a handbreadth thick, and its brim was made like the brim of a cup, like a lily blossom; it could hold 3,000 baths.
6 He also made ten basins in which to wash, and he set five on the right side and five on the left to rinse things for the burnt offering; but the sea was for the priests to wash in.
