The Pharisees were devout men. They studied the scripture they had at the time (the Torah) and many of them could probably recite it verbatim. They knew the scriptures. But they didn't understand them at all. They completely missed Jesus. They looked down on the gentiles as heathen pig eaters who God could not possibly have a plan for. Their Messiah was going to come to defeat their enemies and make them great again (not entirely incorrect but there was a big in between that they missed. They also missed the point of the law and overlooked grace.
Modern mainstream "Christian" leaders study scripture without quite the same level of dilligence but many of them have no doubt read everything and have a strong knowledge of scripture. But they don't understand it at all. Ironically they often look down on the Pharisees for missing the point when they have similar issues themselves. They look down on Israel as a has been nation. They had their hour of glory and now God is done with them according to these "wise" men. God now has a new "Israel" the church. Never mind that Israel is now back on the map and end time prophecies are being fulfilled. Israels evil neighbours want to wipe her of the map but somehow Israel is the biggest obstacle to the peace process and there is a call for "justice for the Palestine" despite God's promises to trample on the enemies of Israel. God broke his covenant with Israel because of their unfaithfulness but somehow we're better than they were. They don't realise that they fulfill end time scriptures by being dismissive of end times. Or that they are part of the church of Laodicea destined to be left behind after the rapture which they fail to see despite it being scripturally evident. They say "the day of the Lord comes as a thief in the night" without understanding either day of the Lord or thief in the night
The religious establishment was not ready for Jesus' first appearance despite it being clear in the word. It is not ready for his next appearance which is also evident for those of us awake. The Pharisees did not see God's plan for the Gentiles. The modern establishment misses His plan for Israel.
