God has really impressed upon me the importance of praise. The following article expresses just a few thoughts on the power and necessity of praise to God. Praise brings the power of God into our lives. God’s original purpose in creating mankind was for fellowship with Him. Praise is an integral part of the fellowship that we can have with God through the redeeming blood of Jesus Christ. We are commanded to praise God, but it is also our privilege to praise Him.
Praise is the key to victorious living. We are commanded in Hebrews 13:15 to praise God continually: “By him therefore let us offer the sacrifice of praise to God continually, that is, the fruit of our lips giving thanks to his name.” Praise brings God on the scene. “And at midnight Paul and Silas prayed and sang praises unto God, and the prisoners heard them. And suddenly there was a great earthquake, so that the foundations of the prison were shaken: and immediately all the doors were opened and everyone’s bands were loosed (Acts 16:25-26).” Praise should be a natural part of our lives because we serve an Almighty, Ruling, Reigning, Victorious God. Moses praised God after the miraculous parting on the Red Sea: “Then sang Moses and the children of Israel this song unto the Lord, and spake, saying, I will sing unto the Lord, for he hath triumphed gloriously: the horse and the rider thrown into the sea. The Lord is my strength and song, and he is become my salvation: he is my God, and I will prepare him an habitation; my father’s God, and I will exalt him (Exodus 15:1-2).” Paul portrays us as always triumphant in Christ. “Now thanks be unto God, which always causeth us to triumph in Christ… (2 Cor. 2:14).”
Praise brings us closer to God. There are many reasons to praise God. One reason is simply because of who He is. He is Jehovah Tsidkenu, our righteousness. “God made him who had no sin to be sin for us, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God (2 Cor. 5:21).” He is Jehovah M’Keddesh, our sanctification. “But of him are ye in Christ Jesus, who of God is made unto us wisdom, and righteousness, and sanctification, and redemption. (1 Cor. 1:30).” He is Jehovah Jireh, our provider. “But my God shall supply all your need according to his riches in glory by Christ Jesus (Phil. 4:19).” He is Jehovah Rophe, our healer. “But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities, the chastisement of our peace was upon him; and with his stripes we are healed (Isaiah 53:5).” He is Jehovah Nissi, our banner. “Moses built an altar and called it the Lord is my Banner (Exodus 17:15).” He is Jehovah Rohi, our shepherd. “I am the good shepherd… (John 10:14). “ “The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not want (Psalm 23:1).” He is Jehovah Shalom, our peace. “But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities, the chastisement of our peace was upon him; and with his stripes we are healed (Isaiah 53:5).” He is Jehovah Shammah, our ever-present Lord and God. “…and lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world. Amen. (Matt. 28:20).”
Jesus is worthy of our praise because of what he has done for us. “But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities, the chastisement of our peace was upon him; and with his stripes we are healed (Isaiah 53:5).”
“You are worthy to take the scroll and to open its seals, because you were slain, and with your blood you purchased men for God from every tribe and language and people and nation. You have made them to be a kingdom and priests to serve our God, and they will reign on the earth (Rev. 5:9-10).”
“Worthy is the Lamb that was slain to receive power, and riches, and wisdom, and strength, and honor, and glory, and blessing. Blessing, and honor, and glory, and power, be unto him that sitteth upon the throne, and unto the Lamb forever and ever (Rev. 5:11-13).” Hallelujah to the Lamb of God! Amen!
