There have been a very strange series of severe earthquakes the past 10 days or so in Mayotte, islands off the east coast of Africa which is an overseas department of France.

They have had a few 5+ magnitude earthquakes (and a few 4+) in these days and it is a little odd Looking back in time, because we can see that earthquakes have occurred here over the years, but they are generally very sporadic, and most are quite small. Also, Mayotte is not located on a fault line where we generally see the majority of earthquakes occur. I had not seen a single earthquake near these islands in the past 9 months. You have to go back 2 years and more to see earthquakes near these islands, but even then, they are sporadic and insignificant.

It's obvious reading the comments of people who are reporting the quakes that long time residents of the island are quite freaked out. This is not normal and these people are very much afraid. Some are saying they are seriously considering relocating.
