I came across this on another Blog I occasionally visit ..... (From what I can discern this is a young lady and new to the blog)....
Here is what she asked
Before a person can make the decision to become a follower of Christ, is there something they are supposed to do? Do they need to read the entire New Testament first? Do they just need to be inspired? Because I know to join Catholicism you need to take a year-long class or something first and then after that get baptized.
Here is what I responded
Not sure I am following you here and having never been a Catholic – unsure what you say they require.
To become a Christian 1) Realize you are a Sinner and you are in need of a Savior 2) Believe that the work of Jesus Christ (His Death, Burial, and Resurrection) made it possible for Him to become that Savior. 3) Ask and Trust that Jesus Christ will be your Savior – simply because His competed work. 4) Thank Him for becoming your Savior.
If you wish to read and study up on it first --- The entire Book of Romans will help.
Did I simplify it too much; should I have gone into more detail (they do not have an edit feature -- so will have to be a new post if I added anything.

I think you stated it well. The simplicity of the Gospel is it's strength and one makes it unique. It's a stumbling block to the Jews and foolishness to the Gentiles, but for those of us being saved - the power of God.
In it's most simple, but complete form it is:
1. Christ died 2. For our sins 3. Rose again
Believe it = you are saved
Reject it = you are not saved
It's important to note that when Paul defines the Gospel in 1 Cor. 15, he tells us that "Christ" died, not just "Jesus". Similarly in his presentation of the Gospel in Romans 10, he infers that believing "Jesus is Lord" is necessary. In other words, faith in the Gospel means a bit more than just that a random person in history died and rose. It's understood that this certain person is Christ (the Anointed one sent by God) and Lord (God in the flesh).

That is why, I worried I said it too simplistically.... Jesus Christ death was not just any death - but the Sinless God Man. His shedding of blood is what brings atonement, which allows God through Grace to grant us the free gift of life.
But I also did not want to throw a bunch of words at her, that she might not know.....

I think you do need to understand a few things about who Jesus is, or you are talking about the wrong Jesus.
Jesus is: God Man Eternal Sinless Alive today Lord (master) of all
