Forgive my scattered thoughts on this. I was reading through Matthew and Mark this week, and I noticed something I had never taken notice of before. It might be nothing and I'm just over thinking it, but tell me if anyone might see more than I do.
The story of feeding the 5000 is in all four gospels. The story of feeding the 4000 is in Matthew and Mark.
They are consistent in the numbers of people and loaves of bread and baskets of leftover food.
When feeding the 5000 (primarily Jews around passover) Jesus broke 5 loaves of bread. The remaining uneaten food took up 12 baskets.
In Matthew and Mark, while feeding the 4000 (thought to be primarily Gentiles), Jesus broke 7 loaves of bread. The remaining uneaten food too up 7 baskets.
From 5 came 12, and from 7 came 7.
When I examine the relevance of the numbers in scripture, I see as follows:
(5)
-Generally represents grace, God's goodness and favor toward man.
-Also associated with the OT Law.
-Ten Commandments (2 sets of 5)
-First 5 on our relationship with God.
-Second 5 on our relationships with eacother.
-5 types of offerings
-burnt offering
-sin offering
-trespass offering
-grain offering
-peace offering
-The Tabernacle
-5 curtains
-5 pillars
-5 sockets
-alter sized 5x5 cubits.
Now (12)
- Considered a perfect number.
- Represents God's power and authority.
- Completeness or the complete and whole nation of Israel.
- 12 tribes (sons of Jacob)
- 12 sons of Ishmael
- 12,000 from each tribe make up the 144,000 in Revelation, receiving salvation through Tribulation (7 years)
- 12 disciples of Jesus.
- New Jerusalem is all 12's (I'll let you check that out if you want to)
And (7)
- 7 is the foundation of God's word
- Number of completeness and perfection (physical amd spiritual)
- Days of the week (7th day of rest)
- Bible has 7 major divisions:
- Law
- Prophets
- Writings/ Psalms
- Gospels and Acts
-General epistles
- Epistles of Paul
- Revelation
- Bible has 49 originally inspired books (7x7)
- 7 titles for Christ in Hebrews
- 7 parables given by Jesus and in Matthew
- 7 churches
- 7 angels to the 7 churches
- 7 seals
- 7 trumpet plagues
- 7 thunders and 7 last plagues
- Resurection of the dead at the 7th trumpet (completing salvation for the church)
- 7 annual Holy Days (feasts)
- Jesus performed 7 miracles on God's Holy Sabboth Day.
"When I broke the five loaves for the five thousand, how many baskets full of broken pieces did you take up?” They said to him, “Twelve.” “And the seven for the four thousand, how many baskets full of broken pieces did you take up?” And they said to him, “Seven.”
Mark 8:19-20 ESV
So back to my scattered thoughts.
"From 5 comes 12" or "From 5, with the abundance of 7, comes 12"
5, being representative of Grace but also Law.
7, being completion, perfection, churches, angels, trumpets, wraths and judgements.
12, being Israel whole and complete.
"From the Law, by Grace and Sacrifice (5), through perfection and judgment, with the addition of the Church (+7), comes a complete and whole Israel into New Jerusalem.(12)"
ITS THE WHOLE STORY in just a sentence.
- 5 also is the number of periods of world empires in Daniel.
- Head of gold
- Chest and Arms of silver.
- Belly and Thighs of bronze
- Legs of iron.
- Feet of iron mixed with clay.
"From out of 5 empires, whats left is perfected Israel in New Jerusalem with the bride of Christ."
Now on to the second multitude of 4000.
"From 7 comes 7"
There is too much here.
"From perfection comes perfection?"
"From creation comes completion?"
7 begets 7.
Help me unload.
Or tell me im crazy.
I find it interesting that the 5000 were mostly Jews, and 5 and 12 mostly reference Israel and OT law or prophecy, while the 4000 fed were mostly gentile, and 7 represents the churchs, the "complete" bible, much of Revelation, and the Holy Feast days, which we are still called to watch.
*edit*: I also forgot to mention that the 5000 Jews were fed first, and the 4000 Gentiles were fed second. Jesus came to his own first, and then only after the Gentiles followed him for 3 DAYS did he feel compassion and feed them.
Anyone with thoughts, help me arrange mine better maybe?
God Bless
