This is to be an ethics based discussion -- not politics -- if you wish to discuss politics start your own thread......
Trump on Thursday unveiled his long-awaited plan to overhaul the immigration system, which proposes a merit-based system to admit more high-skilled, well-educated immigrants.
Here is how one news organization phrased it ... "The United States already has that, of course, but the Trump proposal would essentially base all admission decisions on a point system, where potential new arrivals would be judged based on the skills they have, how much money they have in the bank, if they have a job offer in the U.S., and whether they speak English."
Or in even plainer language "Ask not what America can do for you, but what you can do for America."

Let us see what the Statue of Liberty says about immigration.....
Give me your tired, your poor,
Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,
The wretched refuse of your teeming shore.
Send these, the homeless, tempest-tossed, to me:
I lift my lamp beside the golden door.
Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,
The wretched refuse of your teeming shore.
Send these, the homeless, tempest-tossed, to me:
I lift my lamp beside the golden door.

What does Jesus say about those in need (and what should we do about it)
Luke 6:20-21
Then he looked up at his disciples and said: ‘Blessed are you who are poor, for yours is the kingdom of God. Blessed are you who are hungry now, for you will be filled. Blessed are you who weep now, for you will laugh.’
Then he looked up at his disciples and said: ‘Blessed are you who are poor, for yours is the kingdom of God. Blessed are you who are hungry now, for you will be filled. Blessed are you who weep now, for you will laugh.’
Luke 4:16-19
When he came to Nazareth, where he had been brought up, he went to the synagogue on the sabbath day, as was his custom. He stood up to read, and the scroll of the prophet Isaiah was given to him. He unrolled the scroll and found the place where it was written: ‘The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me to bring good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim release to the captives and recovery of sight to the blind, to let the oppressed go free, to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favour.’

Matthew 25:34-36
Then the king will say to those at his right hand, ‘Come, you that are blessed by my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world; for I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you welcomed me, I was naked and you gave me clothing, I was sick and you took care of me, I was in prison and you visited me.’

The United States of America has ALWAYS taken in those who were IN NEED -- Looking for a Better Life -- Protecting the Weak -- Granting Asylum.....
Yes, I agree we need some strong laws in place to help regulate those immigrating -- and those who attempt to by-pass the process of regulated immigration.
BUT THAT DOES NOT mean -- we set up some type of merit system that looks at your education, and bank account, and labor skills before allowing you in.....
As the Saying on the Statue of Liberty says ...... ALL ARE WELCOME WHO SEARCH FOR FREEDOM!
